Обычный пинг
Протокол Ping был добавлен в Minecraft 1.7 и используется для запроса от сервера минимального количества информации (имени хоста, MOTD, значка и списка игроков). Данный метод гораздо легче в использовании и не требует дополнительной настройки на стороне сервера. Он подключается по TCP к тому порту сервера, через который заходят игроки.
Присутствует обратная совместимость для серверов с версией 1.6 и ниже.

Использование Query
Данный метод использует протокол GameSpy4. В случае с сервером Java-версии, требует включения и назначения порта в файле server.properties:
enable-query=true
query.port=25565
Query позволяет запрашивать полный список плагинов и количество игроков. Однако этот метод более подвержен взломам, поэтому если вам не нужна вся эта информация, придерживайтесь метода Ping, поскольку он более надёжен.
